The race for Lubbock County Tax Assessor-Collector will
be decided in the Republican Primary election. There are three running for the
title which has been most ably held by the retiring Barbara Brooks.
Only one of these candidates has bothered to contact me in any manner what so
ever. And, even with that I was not satisfied issuing an endorsement without
getting knowing that person’s positions. You see, the legislature set it up
where this office-holder is the sole decider on whether to participate in the
unethical withholding of tag renewals if civil red light camera fine had not
been paid.
And although Lubbock is removing the cameras, any city in the county could
install them to make money. So this issue matters. It tells us about the
philosophy of the candidates. One of the candidates, a Miss Lujan, is or has
been, an employee of the firm which collects red light camera money. Another is
a fine employee of the Tax Assessor’s office now. Her name is Ramos.
I’ve spoken with insiders in and around the job of Tax Assessor Collector and
they believe Mr. Ronnie Keister to be more than ready for the job. I spoke with
Mr. Keister, the only candidate to contact me, and he says that even if the
commissioners adopt a system from the state, to collect upon warrants, he will
work to make sure that photo enforcement fines are not included. He opposes the
use of the red light cameras.
Also Keister has participated in a GOP precinct convention before and is a
Republican. I recommend you vote for Ronnie Keister for Lubbock County Tax
Assessor-Collector.
