What follows is a portion of the happenings at City Hall today as put together by a listener from the tape of the event:
Miller: Mr. Martin would you and Karen come up?
Martin: [inaudible] down here
Miller: Tom always wants it his way, if you haven't noticed. He's gonna do it
down here. I'll just have to throw this at you later. [pause] Judge, you bet. Go
right ahead.
Now later....
Martin: This is my mother Mary Martin. This is my dad, Chief Master Sgt, Elmer
C. Martin jr. U.S. Air force retired. [Martin's voice cracks a little as he
mentions his dad. It's clearly an emotional moment as he shares this with his
elderly dad in the wheelchair.]
Moments later...
Martin: Dad went through the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. And also his
unit helped build the pontoon bridge across the Rhine so he can certainly handle
this ceremony. Before we begin I would like to ask everyone present to give a
round of applause for Mayor David Miller in honor of his service to this city.
[applause.]
The script doesn't do it justice. The audio (and video) are just damn powerful.
Martin showed such class and style. Wow! Kill 'em with kindness. K'boom.
