Robert,
I always get very riled up when I hear people talk about "gay marriage" or
"civil unions" to protect their "rights".
To quote David, "There's no reason that my life partner and I shouldn't be
allowed to enter into a contract that says, "if you die, I get this" and
vice-versa, or that, "if you get sick, I can see you in the hospital," or better
yet, we should be able to enter into a contract that gives us the same tax
advantages of a heterosexual couple that has a 50% chance of breaking up."
I am not going to address the Tax issue, but hey, if they want to pay the same
tax that my wife and I do as a married couple, filing jointly, then more power
to them. Let them Pay more in Taxes!
But to the first two items that I quoted from David.
1. ""if you die, I get this" and vice-versa" - They can enter into a contract
with out a "marriage" or "union". It is called a Will, plain and simple. Just
because my wife and I are married, does not mean we get each others stuff if the
other dies, we have to have a Will to be explicit as what we want done with out
stuff. We can leave it to whom ever we want.
2. "if you get sick, I can see you in the hospital" - This is handled with a
Power of Attorney document, a Medical Power of Attorney Document and /or a
Living Will Document. When my father had a stroke, was hospitalized and not able
to decide for himself, I had his Medical Power of Attorney to make his medical
decisions. We were not married!
I say to these people who clamor about their rights, "Go see a lawyer, you have
these rights you so desperately seek."
Oh the un-educated masses.
Sincerely,
Rick
