Robert,
I will be the first to admit that I do not have all of the details on the soccer
field issue(s). I am still in the process of gathering information.
With that being said, just on the surface, I bet for about a third to half of
the money, the city could update the current soccer fields that are being used.
Expand parking, put in a new entry/exit road, better restroom facilities, a
little dirt to even the fields, sod, etc.
Here is a question, what is going to happen to the old facilities?
Here is a thought, at FM 1585 and Milwaukee, it is a two lane road, with only
one foreseeable entry to the fields, just like what we have now. And for
traffic, I have been by the new baseball fields at that location, and traffic is
REALLY BAD, read worse than the soccer fields now, when games are going on.
Having two children that play, I am out there every Saturday in the fall and
spring for their games. Yes, traffic can be a bit of an issue as well as
parking, but that is why we leave early for the games. The fields are in better
condition than the fields that I played on as a kid, and I for sure do not see
them spending the amount of money they say will be needed for the new field
maintenance, on the old field maintenance. Who is paying for maintenances now on
the fields that are being used? It was into the second or third week of games
before the fields, where my kids play, were even mowed.
I am of the opinion that we need to take care of what we have, not just up and
move because it gets worn out. With that thinking, we should have a bond issue
to move 34th Street to SW Lubbock and just start over.
Do we have good facilities now? I believe we do. Could they be better? Yes they
could. But I think the people that play should pay, not just the city through a
bond package.
I would like to see an accounting of the monies generated by the Lubbock Soccer
Association. Being a parent of kids that play, I have been a little leery of
some of their campaigning and language that has been used, as well as numbers
that have been thrown around in regards to the number of kids that play. 3500
seems a little, or a lot high. I know they have a fall and spring season, are my
two kids being counted twice for playing in the fall and spring? That would be
four players. And we only paid $90 for the both of them to play this fall, and
we had to pay for new uniforms.
Thanks for all that you do Robert.
Sincerely,
Rick E.
P.S. - About the splash pads, I thought we were out of water? Drought? Who pays
for the water? We do!
