Dear Senator Cornyn,
My wife spent her last year of active duty as a US Army Doctor at Ft. Hood and worked where these killings took place when she was helping get the 4th Infantry Division deployed for the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
I was appalled to learn that the Ft. Hood killer was taken out by a civilian Killeen police officer.
I urge you to launch an investigation into why our soldiers are not required to carry their weapons at all times. We are at war. We trust these people to carry weapons in a foreign country, but not in the United States? That is not logical and foolhardy.
If the soldiers at Ft. Hood had been armed, many less would have been killed. This disaster may not have even occurred because the killer would have known that everyone he was targeting was armed.
Not only that, but the dead would have stood a better chance at the Killeen Walmart where there would have been licensed gun-carrying Texas citizens to defend them from this madman.
The army needs to immediately change its policy about carrying weapons on US soil. Gun-free zones don't work - in fact they encourage killing fields like this.
Cordially,
David Carr
