The 'Story Comment of the Day' in today's AJ was: "A
church is doing more for the homeless than the city is. Think about that."
I am thinking about that, and I think that helping people, homeless or
otherwise, should be an act of charity, charity being the voluntary giving of
oneself by an individual to help someone else. This can be done through a
church, where people join together voluntarily
and can decide to direct their contributions in any way they choose.
A city, or any other governmental body, cannot do charity because they do not have any assets of their own creation. Anything such as 'public' help is a misappropriation of funds taken from the taxpayer by force of law. To be blunt, it's not charity, it's theft.
So, having thought about it, I have decided that it is a proper role for a
church to help the homeless. The city should limit its role to maintaining
public property for the use and benefit of all its citizens.
