RE: Decision to verify recall petitions in secret
I ask you to reconsider your decision to have the process of recall
petition signature verification done in secret without outside
observation of the process and methods used. This decision is harmful to
the City of Lubbock and goes against the spirit of all election
practices in the State of Texas.
Petitions, and all other matters related to elections, are public
records in Texas and available for review. And, all election processes
which can directly affect an election result are open for public
observation and scrutiny by various methods. The most formal requires
appointment of a “watcher” by involved parties.
I ask you that you immediately:
-
Publish the date(s) and
time(s) when the verification process will be taking place, and;
-
Allow petitioners and
candidates to appoint “watchers” as is done for ballot counting.
Your insistence that this
process be done in secret, without public oversight of the work and
methods, adds to public distrust of their elected government. This is
especially true when one considers that in the previous petition
submission, the count from your office produced two different results.
